Training Like A Champion: The Rocky Weights Workout

OptiMYz Magazine got a behind the scenes look at what it’s like to train like an Olympian.

OptiMYz Magazine got a behind the scenes look at what it’s like to train like an Olympian, and it doesn’t take long to realize these guys are elite athletes.

It’s 4pm and it’s go time. “They don’t like it much when you’re late,” says Olympian Andrew Russell with a grin on his face.

At the Bell Aliant Centre on Banook Lake in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, eight members of the national canoe/kayak team are about to embark on their hardest workout of the week. They call it, Rocky Weights.

Csom Latoroszki is the man behind the workout. And it’s clear to see that he’s the man in charge.

Csom (pronounced “Chum”) is in his 12th year as the national team’s paddling coach, and has coached in each of the last three Summer Olympics.

Originally from Vac, Hungary, Csom arrived in Canada in 1991 to coach at the Cheema Aquatic Club. What was supposed to be just a 3-month stay turned into a permanent residence and he’s been here ever since.

“I went back home [Hungary], got my family and moved here [Canada],” coach Csom tells me.

The sport of paddling in Canada has benefited from this decision.

Adding to his Olympic credentials, Csom has been the team Canada World Championship coach since 1997. He has also been named Nova Scotia coach of the year on multiple occasions and has coached World Champion Karen Furneaux and medalists Andrew Russell, Richard Dalton, Mike Scarola, Genny Orton and Mihai Apostal.

Csom is an athlete himself. A former paddler, he attended University in Budapest to study Physical Education and specialized in the Kayak Coaching discipline.

After a quick history lesson I was up to speed. Now it’s time to get down to business.

Today’s workout will last about 75 minutes in total. It starts with an ab workout (30 minutes total) of two series of 15 one-minute workouts. Next, it’s on to some stretching and 35 minutes of the featured “Rocky Weights” workout.

As promised, he are highlights of the workout.

It’s only fitting that right outside the Bell Aliant Training Centre is the finish line of the international race course on Banook Lake. The site where these athletes have had many victories.
