In 2002, life was as golden as a California sunset. I was literally on top of the world—living on a mountaintop in Topanga, California gazing through the canyon at the Pacific Ocean. As a private chef for Jeff Lynne of ELO, I even spent a week cooking for and getting to know Paul McCartney while he recorded at Jeff’s studio. Life was fantastic… until it wasn’t.
This is my canary in the coal mine mystery story, one that just might explain why so many of us in the Western world are struggling with gut issues, fatigue, and brain fog. But don’t worry—there’s hope!
So, back to my story. That fateful day, I took a ride on a young horse I had been training. Sounds lovely, right? Well, until he decided to rear up and come crashing down—directly between my legs. Let’s just say, my pelvis didn’t appreciate it. I shattered bones, crushed abdominal organs, and spent nearly three weeks in the hospital. Miraculously, I healed fast. But six weeks later, a new nightmare began—searing gastric pain, unbearable inflammation, and a body that seemed to reject food like a bad breakup.
Doctor after doctor scratched their heads. I was reacting to everything. Then, in what felt like divine intervention, I stumbled upon Joel Fuhrman, MD’s Eat to Live book. Desperate, I gave his plant-based, whole-foods approach a shot—and boom, I started feeling human again!
I was all in—so much so that I wrote a business proposal for Dr. Fuhrman, and before I knew it, I was moving in with him, his wife Lisa, their kids, and even the dog. My roles? Writer, dietary assistant, recipe developer, patient coach, and full-time Nutritarian evangelist. Watching patients reverse type 2 diabetes, heart disease, migraines, and autoimmune conditions wasn’t just inspiring it was mind-blowing.
But something still nagged at me. I started noticing an increasing number of other people—clients, friends—struggling with mystery symptoms: bloating, fatigue, weird food sensitivities. What was going on?! I dove headfirst into research, learning powerful symptom-management techniques.
Still, I wasn’t satisfied with managing symptoms. I wanted real healing! And just when I was about to lose hope, I discovered a microbiome scientist and gastroenterologist who cracked the code: the microbiome affects EVERYTHING! And that’s where the real adventure begins…
Science has spoken—your gut microbiome is running the show when it comes to your physical and mental health. Want to feel your best? It’s time to give your microbiome some TLC! Our limbic brain (a.k.a. your emotion’s command center) shapes our thoughts, perceptions, and even our microbiome. And at the heart of it all? Food. What we eat directly impacts our gut microbiome, brain function, and overall well-being.
Now, I know that dealing with gut issues and food sensitivities can make healthy eating feel like an uphill battle. Trust me, you’re not alone! That’s why I’m bringing you the rock stars of the health world—the top experts on food, the microbiome, gut health, and mental wellness.
