Whether we are mothers, CEOs, homemakers, athletes, or entrepreneurs, or dedicated members of our community, all women are powerful beings. In my humbly biased opinion, no one is more determined than a woman with a goal. Women are so much more than their external appearance. Women are their minds, their hearts, and their insights. That is what I hope to share with you through this newsletter.
In Canada, there are currently more than 360,000 women who are self-employed. Thousands of women who made the choice to bet on themselves and make waves in the business world. Women who are role models for creating your own authentic life.
Women know what other women want and need. Founder of Canadian intimate apparel company Knix, Joanna Griffiths, created “Leakproof Underwear” when she realized there was a need for undergarments that served a purpose other than glam and sex appeal. Now a flourishing, woman-owned business focused on changing the narrative around women’s bodies, Knix started from a single conversation Griffiths had with her mother.
More than ever before, women are making space for themselves and their ideas. Tara Bosch, the founder and CEO of Canadian brand Smart Sweets, created the low-sugar candy company when she decided to cut unnecessary sugar from her diet, but still had a deep love of candy. In an interview with BBC, Bosch shared how she “always had an innate sense of urgency, resourcefulness, and the ability to make something happen if [she] decided [she] wanted to make it happen.” Bosch had a belief in herself and understood that she had the drive and talent to achieve her goals.
The conversation around women is changing. No longer are we delegated to the homes and the kitchens – unless we choose to be there! We can choose to have children, or not, or to have a successful career, or not. The choice for how you spend your time is completely yours. There are no limits to what you can achieve, as long as you set your mind to it.
The most important choice you can make is to choose to invest in yourself. If you have a desire or business idea in your heart, find inspiration in the countless women who came before you. Generations of women have made the choice to voice their opinions, start their businesses, or find their place at the executive table. Thousands of women who have been unapologetic in their quest for personal success and growth. Look to your mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and sisters to see the proof of your greatness in your own heritage.
Build other women up. Support women-run businesses. Speak kindness to others and to yourself. Take care of your mind and body. Most significantly, be bold and confident when chasing your dreams.
