Fall Back into Better Habits

They say, “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today.” I thought I understood that, until life gave me a very personal reminder.

Not long ago, my daughter and I were dropping off donations for our church’s clothing drive. In her eagerness to help, she accidentally included a bag that wasn’t meant for charity at all, my dry-cleaning bag. Inside there were three of my absolute favourite outfits, including a barely worn suit I adored.

I’d been meaning to take them to the cleaner for weeks, but they’d been sitting in my car, waiting for “the right time.” When I realized they were gone, my heart sank. These weren’t just clothes; they were part of my story, linked to memories, confidence, and comfort.

By sheer luck and the kindness of a gentleman who climbed over mountains of donations, I got them back. Relief washed over me, but so did a deeper realization: procrastination had almost cost me something I valued.

It made me wonder, what else in life slips away because we keep putting things off?

For many of us, it’s not just about errands like dry cleaning. It’s the “new healthy diet” we keep promising ourselves we’ll start next week. It’s the gym membership quietly draining our bank account while we find excuses. It’s the nights we stay up late scrolling, knowing we’ll pay for it in the morning.

We all have those “I’ll get to it later” habits. But over time, they chip away at our health, our energy, and even our joy.

The 21-Day Shift

Research suggests it takes about 21 days to build a new habit. Three weeks. That’s all it takes to prove to yourself that you can follow through, and to start feeling the momentum of real change.

So why wait? Choose one thing you’ve been putting off and commit to it for 21 days. A daily walk. Prepping healthy lunches. Going to bed an hour earlier. Booking that overdue health check-up.

Don’t wait for the “perfect time.” It doesn’t exist. In my case, all it took was a couple of hours to drop off my clothes. The hardest part wasn’t the action, it was finally deciding to do it.

As the air cools and our routines settle after summer, nature gives us a gentle nudge: change is possible at any moment. Fall is the season of fresh starts. Why not “fall back” into the habits that make you stronger, healthier, and happier?

Don’t wait for a scare, like almost losing your favourite suit, to take action. And certainly, don’t wait until your health forces your hand. Remember: sick care is far more expensive than healthcare.

This fall, choose one small daily habit. Start today, not tomorrow. Commit for 21 days and watch where it takes you. Those tiny steps can lead to the big, lasting changes you’ve been hoping for.

It’s time to reset.
