As the year winds to a close and colder evenings draw us toward fireplaces and soft blankets, the world feels quieter, more contemplative. It’s a natural season for reflection, a chance to honour what we’ve learned and carry those lessons forward. Though the past eleven months have held unique experiences for each of us, there are themes that have emerged that may ring true for us all. These are the things I will hold close as we look towards the new year.
- Hold on tightly, let go lightly. Be relentless in your pursuit of joy, give yourself fully to all that you do, but allow each experience to reach its end in time. When something delights you, go all in! There is no shame in pursuing wholeheartedly the things that you love, just as there is no failure in releasing what has run its course. What matters most is that you were present for it all.
- Adapt but stay rooted in who you are. Here will always be a new wellness trend promising transformation, a new routine to adopt, a new way to revolutionize your life. Some shifts bring us closer to who we are (or who we want to become); others merely pull us off course. Meet change with an open heart, but never at the expense of your values or your inner voice. Let your truth be your guiding light.
- The best things in life really are free. A whole afternoon with a friend. Bundling up for a nice, long walk in the fresh air. Music turned up high as you dance through your home until you’re breathless and smiling and giddy. Rereading a beloved, dog-eared book that never fails to lift your heart. A deep belly laugh that feels like it’s healing you from the inside out. There are countless ways to rekindle the joy of being alive. Seek them out or create them. Let them fill the cracks where stress tries to settle and stretch your heart in deep gratitude for these profound moments.
- Life is meant to be lived—deeply and fully. Take a break from your phone and let the real world pull you back into your body. Strike up conversations. Connect deeply with strangers and friends alike. Try that dance class you keep bookmarking. Spend an hour, or a whole day, outside. Move in ways that feel good. Wiggle your fingers and toes and ears. Smile more. Eat the box of chocolates you’ve been saving for a special moment and let this moment count as special instead. This isn’t about indulgence for indulgence’s sake, it’s about enriching each moment to be richer, sweeter, more astonishingly, breathtakingly alive.
- Stay curious. Everyone you meet is carrying something worth learning. When you speak to people, really listen to what they’re saying. Watch how they light up when you engage them on their favourite topic. Hear how effusive they become when they’re given the opportunity to speak about their passions. Hear the excitement in their voice when they finally feel seen. In every conversation, there’s a chance to push the boundaries of your knowledge or simply to practice patience, compassion, and connection.
Bonus: Look for the love. Despite what the headlines suggest, love exists all around us. From the man smiling to himself as he twists together multi-coloured embroidery threads into a bracelet for his wife, to the person peeling an orange and sacrificing their fingernails to the rind before they hand the best pieces to their friend, there are a million tiny acts of love every day. Notice them. Add to them. Revel in them. They are restorative to faith and to humanity.
Each of us will carry different lessons into the new year. But as you reflect on the months behind you, ask yourself: What still feels true? What can I release? And what space might open for new things to emerge when I let something go?
The year ahead is waiting, ready to be filled with whatever you choose to grow.
