It started in 2005 with an observation that when cultivated shellfish have an increased diet of phytoplankton, they grow to over twice their regular size. The main strain of phytoplankton used to create Karen® Phytoplankton is the Nannochloropsis gaditana (Gaditae®) species because of its high nutritional profile and ability to accumulate nutrients, especially omega fatty acids.
