Take Control: Stop SAD in Its Track

Home » Fitness » Take Control: Stop SAD in Its Track

“Make hay while the sun shines” is more than a saying. The bright and hot days of spring and summer bring energy, joy, and motivation. But as the hazy days fade into the darker, colder months of fall and winter, a noticeable shift can occur. The spring in the steps of some people begin to disappear. Feelings of sadness, low energy, lack of interest in activities they once loved, and even depression may set in. This condition is known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

What is SAD?

SAD is a form of depression triggered by seasonal changes, especially shorter days and reduced exposure to sunlight. It affects people at different levels. For some, it brings a mild dip in mood; for others, it can feel crippling, leading to despair and loss of functioning, depression. Left untreated, SAD can slowly pull individuals into a dark and overwhelming place, making it harder to recover.

Recognizing the early signs is critical. Common symptoms include:

  • Persistent low mood
  • Irritability
  • Loss of energy and motivation
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Disrupted sleep patterns
  • Withdrawal from social activities
  • Changes in appetite or weight

As the saying goes, “A problem known is half solved.” Awareness is the first step to taking back control.

Here are a few things to consider:

Take Early Action

The good news is that SAD can be managed. By addressing symptoms proactively, individuals can prevent a mild case from spiraling into deeper depression. If you notice changes in yourself, a family member, or a friend, don’t wait, take steps to intervene.

Build a Resilient Mindset

Your mindset matters. Instead of only changing your wardrobe for winter, change your outlook too. Plan for the season ahead. Set small, achievable goals, and make a conscious effort to keep light, energy, and positivity alive in your daily routine.

Stay Socially Connected

When the weather turns cold and staying indoors feels tempting, resist the urge to isolate. Social interaction is powerful medicine. Whether through phone calls, virtual meetings, or in-person gatherings, connecting with others can significantly improve mood and reduce feelings of loneliness.

Stay Physically Active

Exercise is a natural antidepressant. Even light activity like walking, stretching, or dancing can lift your spirits and energize your body. Whenever possible, get outside during daylight hours to absorb natural sunlight.

Monitor Mental Health

Do regular mental health check-ins with yourself and loved ones. If someone seems withdrawn, gently encourage them to talk about how they feel. Suggest professional help if symptoms persist or intensify, there’s no shame in reaching out for support.

Try Light Therapy

Phototherapy (light therapy) has proven effective for many people with SAD. There are light boxes that mimic natural daylight and can help regulate mood. Dawn simulators, alarm clocks that gradually intensifies to simulate sunrise, are another helpful option for easing into the mornings.

SAD may be common, but it does not define you. By cultivating resilience, staying connected, and using available tools, you can fight back and reclaim joy during the darker months.

Rise up, take control, and remember; you are stronger than you think.
