Catching up with my dear friend, Joel Fuhrman, M.D., brought back a flood of memories and gratitude. He’s not only a board-certified family physician and seven-time New York Times bestselling author—he’s someone whose life’s mission is to help people heal naturally. I had the privilege of living with Joel, his wife Lisa, their children, and their beloved dog in 2005, during a pivotal time in his career. I helped build their early nutrition-focused business and later became his cooking instructor, dietary assistant, patient coach, and recipe developer. And he saved my life.
Watching people walk through the doors with so-called irreversible conditions and walk out transformed—just by following the healing power of food—was nothing short of miraculous.
Joel’s passion for nutrition was sparked when he was just twelve. His father had recovered from an illness by adopting a whole food, plant-based diet, and the entire family followed suit. That early exposure to the power of nutrition shaped Joel’s life and career. Before medicine, he and his sister were world-class pair skaters, training for the Olympics. But a career-ending heel injury shifted his path—one that would ultimately lead to helping thousands reclaim their health.
What makes his Nutritarian Diet unique is its deep focus on micronutrients—those vitamins, minerals, and healing compounds naturally found in whole plants. Unlike many plant-based diets that are heavy on starches, Joel emphasizes greens, berries, cruciferous vegetables, nuts, and seeds. He often says, “You’re not just eating to survive. You’re eating to thrive.”
We talked about the rise in chronic illness, especially among young people. “Type 2 diabetes can resolve in as little as three weeks,” he said. “Reflux disappears, headaches stop, inflammation subsides—and people begin to truly heal.”
Joel also teaches the “how” behind eating. He emphasizes chewing raw cruciferous vegetables until they’re practically liquid, mixing them with saliva to release powerful anti-cancer compounds. Small things—like how thoroughly you chew or the size of your meals—can make a huge difference in digestion and nutrient absorption.
That’s the kind of knowledge guests receive at his paradise like Eat to Live Retreat Center in San Diego. It’s not a clinic—it’s a healing sanctuary. Patients stay for a month or more, enjoying delicious meals by gourmet Nutritarian chefs, daily fitness and mindfulness sessions, and the attentive care of Dr. Fuhrman himself. His wife Lisa is also a guiding presence, nurturing guests with warmth and kindness. And when people leave, they don’t just feel better—they feel empowered.
Joel and Lisa raised all four of their children on the Nutritarian Diet, and remarkably, they never needed antibiotics. It’s a testament to the body’s natural resilience when fueled with the right foods. As a family doctor early in his career, Joel saw recurring illnesses in kids who were trapped in a cycle of sickness and antibiotics. He worked to break that cycle, often inviting children to become the health champions in their own families. He wrote Disease-Proof Your Child with that mission in mind.
Changing lifelong habits isn’t easy, especially in a world addicted to fat, sugar, and salt. Joel understands this better than anyone. Helping people stick with this lifestyle has always been the challenge. Food addiction is real—and it’s everywhere. That’s why his support system is so critical. That’s why his approach includes emotional health, mindfulness, and community. Whether through his books, online membership, or retreat, he offers real solutions for people at every stage of their wellness journey.
For those who can’t attend his retreat, his website offers tools like personalized meal plans, over 2,000 recipes, masterclasses, and even an Ask the Doctor forum to connect with Joel directly. His most recent book, Eat for Life, includes the latest scientific research and practical tools for healing.
As Joel says, “You don’t have to accept illness as your fate. You can heal. You can live a long, vibrant life—with a clear mind, a strong body, and a peaceful heart.”
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from him, it’s this: the body wants to heal. And with the right knowledge, support, and love—it absolutely can.
