Everything in our world seems to move so quickly, it often feels like a constant battle just to stay on top of things. The pace of life can be overwhelming, and there’s a real risk of getting swept away in the constant rush of work, family, commitments, and technology. But I believe it’s essential that we all take a timeout.
For me, the reminder came during a recent summer trip to Switzerland. Being immersed in nature, breathing fresh mountain air, and exploring different wellness practices made me realize how vital it is to slow down and nourish ourselves on every level. Travel has a way of opening us up, breaking routines, and allowing space for renewal.
Self-nourishment isn’t only about food, though what we put into our bodies plays a major role. It’s about tending to every part of ourselves: physical health, mental clarity, emotional balance, spiritual connection, and overall wellbeing. It’s about feeding the body with nutrients, the mind with knowledge and inspiration, and the soul with stillness and gratitude.
One of the ways I nurture myself daily is through reading. I call it “mind nourishment.” Every evening before bed, I carve out time with a book. It’s calming, restorative, and it offers fresh perspective. Reading allows me to step into different worlds while also letting go of the day.
Alongside reading, I turn to practices like Reiki, exercise, and grounding in nature. Each nourishes me differently, but together they create balance. Nature, in particular, holds unmatched power for me. Walking barefoot on the earth, standing in the sea, or simply sitting quietly outside is deeply re-energizing. These small yet profound acts remind me of my connection to the earth and allow me to disconnect from the constant noise of technology.
Nutrition is another pillar of self-nourishment. I’ve learned how much better I feel when I choose whole, fresh foods over processed or fast options. A colourful stir fry, a simple banana, or a yogurt can be more satisfying than anything from a drive-thru. These choices fuel the body and support mental clarity. When we feed ourselves well, we honour ourselves.
Travel, too, continues to nourish me. Experiencing new places and cultures is more than a change of scenery, it’s nourishment for the mind and spirit. It broadens our horizons, teaches gratitude, and reminds us that growth often happens when we step outside our routines.
Energy is another important part of the equation. Where we spend our energy, and with whom, matters. I often think of it as our “fuel for life.” Some people and spaces energize us, while others deplete us. Being mindful of this helps us protect our wellbeing. When you call out to the universe with positive energy, it responds in kind.
Equally important is rest. Sleep is a cornerstone of self-nourishment, restoring balance and recharging both body and mind. Incorporating meditation before bed helps me sleep more deeply and wake with greater calm. It’s in those still moments that I often feel most grounded, even in a chaotic world.
Mornings are another opportunity for care. I’ve learned not to reach for my phone first thing. Instead, I prefer to begin calmly, disconnected from notifications. A small but powerful practice I’ve kept since boarding school is making my bed every morning. It sets the tone for discipline and focus, qualities that ripple into the rest of the day.
Boundaries, too, are a form of nourishment. Protecting personal time is essential, especially for those of us working across time zones. For me, that means limiting late-night calls and structuring my schedule around what supports my wellbeing. With planning, it’s always possible to carve out time for yourself.
Ultimately, self-nourishment is about balance. It’s found in travel, in healthy routines, in daily rituals, and in the courage to live authentically. It’s about being yourself without worrying what others think and trusting that the universe will reflect that energy back to you. When we commit to nourishing our minds, bodies, and souls, we don’t just survive the fast pace of life, we thrive in it.
