Tis the Season of Giving

Ah, it’s my favorite time of the year again! As a Christmas Eve baby, I’ve never lacked celebration on my birthday. Whether I am mindfully celebrating or not, the whole world seems to celebrate with me. This joyous season, regardless of religion, is a time of giving and receiving.

We’ve all heard the saying, “It is better to give than to receive.” For me, giving has always come easily. It brings me joy, lights up my spirit, and reminds me of life’s purpose. Receiving, however, has always been harder. I used to hesitate when others offered me gifts or help, until someone once said something that shifted my perspective: “Why would you want to be the only one to receive the joy of giving?” That simple statement was an eye-opener. Receiving graciously is not just about us, it allows others to share in the joy of giving too.

This season, I invite us all to share joy by giving more than we receive. While the holidays have become heavily commercialized, the essence of the season has nothing to do with shopping lists or flashy gifts. At its heart, this is a season to pause, to be mindful, and to ask ourselves: How can I brighten someone else’s life?

There are countless ways, both big and small:

  • Visit people who are sick in hospitals. A kind word or a simple treat can lift spirits more than we realize.
  • Spend time at a seniors’ home. Bring baked goods, sing carols, or simply sit and listen to stories—they are treasures waiting to be shared.
  • Deliver toys to children in hospitals. Their smiles remind us of what truly matters.
  • Contribute through your religious or community groups to support those less privileged.
  • Look within your own family. Who is quietly struggling and could use help?

And let’s remember, giving isn’t always about material things. Sometimes, the most meaningful gifts are our time and presence. Think about caregivers, especially those looking after loved ones with chronic illnesses like dementia. Offering them a few hours of relief, bringing over a meal, or even volunteering to sit with their loved one so they can rest, shop, or simply breathe can make a world of difference. These acts of kindness don’t just lighten burdens; they nurture hope.

As we step into this joyous season, let’s keep this question top of mind: How can I make a difference in someone’s life? What impact can I leave that will ripple long after the decorations are put away?

The beauty of giving is that it multiplies. Joy shared becomes joy doubled. Love given comes back doubled. Gratitude expressed deepens bonds that last a lifetime.

So, as we gather with family and friends, exchange gifts, and celebrate in our own unique ways, let’s not forget the true gift of this season, making life brighter for others.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and may God bless you richly in this season of giving.
